I found an interesting video on Youtube that explains why some spell it "Rusin" (my family name) and some spell it "Rusyn".
It boils down to the language from which it was translated. Translated from Hungarian, with it's Latin alphabet, the name is "Rusin" with an "i". Translated from Russian, with it's Cyrillic alphabet, it's "Rusyn" with a "y".
We often see Rusin/Rusyn in conjunction with "Carpatho-" as "Carpatho-Rusin" This is used only in America to give people a geographic sense of where we come from. The rest of the world uses just Rusin/Rusyn.
